The Nikkei Stock Average falls 1.1% to 49624.20 in early trade, tracking Wall Street's decline overnight.
"Risk appetite remains muted ahead of a busy schedule for the week," says Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at IG, in an email.
The slide in artificial-intelligence-related stocks that weighed on the Nasdaq Composite Index on Monday could also be weighing on Japan's technology stocks.
Yaskawa Electric drops 5.5%, Fujikura sheds 5.1% and Japan Exchange Group loses 4.7%. USD/JPY is at 154.74, compared with 155.21 in New York late Monday.
