(Reuters) - Indian shares rose in early trade on Wednesday, but gave up some of the opening gains as elevated crude oil prices and caution ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy decision continued to weigh on sentiment.
The Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex gained about 0.4% each to 23,212 and 74,295.83 points, respectively, as of 10:25 a.m. IST. They had risen as much as 0.7% earlier.
Nine of 16 major sectors logged gains. The broader small-caps and mid-caps slipped 1% and 0.5%, respectively.
"The biggest challenges for the market are global in nature as investors deal with higher crude oil prices and a likely U.S. Federal Reserve rate hike later today," said Sunny Agrawal, head of fundamental equity research at SBICAPS Securities.
A flurry of initial public offerings also pressured the market, analysts said.
"The momentum-driven stocks, predominantly in midcaps and smallcaps, have seen sharp profit booking. While Nifty may find support around the 23,000-points level, the damage is seen more on the broader market side," Agrawal said.
Both Nifty and Sensex fell over 1% each on Monday after having dropped about 4.8% in the last five weeks.
Brent crude traded at around $108 a barrel as supply risks intensified, following Saudi Arabia's suspension of oil loading at its Yanbu port and cuts to Europe shipments. O/R
Other Asian markets were muted ahead of the Fed policy decision, due after Indian market hours, with most investors expecting a rate hike.
Among individual stocks, payment-linked companies were in focus after the government said it would impose a 0.4% merchant discount rate (MDR) on select person-to-merchant transactions above 2,000 rupees, effective October 15.
Paytm and Yes Bank rose 0.7% and 2.4%, respectively.
Cash management companies Radiant Cash Management and CMS Info Systems jumped 2.7% and 3% on hopes of increased cash withdrawals due to MDR charges on UPI transactions.
Saatvik Green Energy jumped 6.6% after securing order worth over 10 billion rupees.
