Senegal's Constitutional Council Thursday struck down a bill passed by the parliament last week that sought to strengthen the powers of the legislature at the expense of the president.
The ruling was the latest development in a dispute between the president and parliament that has already seen heated exchanges inside the chamber, an opposition boycott and scuffles outside the building.
The Constitutional Council ruled that the legislation was "contrary to the Constitution", after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye referred the matter to them.
The Pastef party, led by Faye's rival and former prime minister Ousmane Sonko, had proposed the measure.
It was aimed at strengthening the powers of the National Assembly and the prime minister, while effectively curtailing the powers of the president.
Faye fired Sonko as prime minister in May, but Sonko was swiftly named speaker of the National Assembly, which is controlled by Pastef.
The opposition and various civil society organisations have criticised the amendment.
And when parliament passed the bill late last month, Faye announced his intention of putting the issue to a referendum.
