Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei index closed marginally higher on Friday, propped up by a calm session on Wall Street despite caution from investors over a new deadly virus from China.
The index rose 0.13 percent, or 31.74 points, to 23,827.18. Over the week, it lost 0.9 percent.
The broader Topix index was flat at 1,730.44 and fell 0.3 percent from a week earlier.
Tokyo shares opened higher after US markets strengthened on Thursday as the World Health Organization stopped short of declaring a global emergency over the deadly outbreak.
"But the market remains vigilant over possible developments on the new virus," said Daiwa Securities chief technical analyst Eiji Kinouchi.
Japan on Friday confirmed the country's second case of the novel coronavirus strain in a man who travelled from the Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak.
The death toll in China has jumped to 26 with more than 800 total cases, according to the latest Chinese tally.
Authorities have shut down public transport in nine cities -- together home to more than 30 million people -- in an effort to contain the infection.
Tapas Strickland, director of markets at National Australia Bank, said markets were fearful the virus could spread further.
"Even if it doesn't, the impact on China could be large," he said in a commentary.
The yen hardly moved after Japanese government data showed the consumer inflation -- excluding volatile fresh food prices -- rising 0.7 percent in December from a year earlier, far below the central bank's two percent target.
The dollar was trading at 109.53 yen in Asian afternoon trade against 109.47 yen in New York Thursday afternoon.
Chip-making device manufacturer Tokyo Electron jumped 0.81 percent to 25,210 yen after Intel reported robust earnings.
