Chinese Stocks Rise After Break as Traders Assess US Talks, Data

Chinese stocks edged higher on their return from a five-day holiday, with investors watching signs of progress in trade talks with the US while assessing a host of domestic consumption data.
The benchmark CSI 300 Index gained as much as 0.6% in early trading on Tuesday. Sub-gauges of technology and telecom stocks were among the top gainers.
The advance onshore came after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's said the US could see some "substantial progress in the coming weeks" in trade talks with China. That followed President Donald Trump's remarks that said he is willing to lower tariffs on China at some point but had no current plans to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The comments from US officials followed a Friday statement by China's Commerce Ministry that said it is assessing the possibility of trade talks with the US.
A gauge of Chinese equities in Hong Kong dropped as much as 0.8% in early trading after climbing almost 2% on Friday, suggesting that investors are still cautious. Hong Kong was also shut on Monday.
Meanwhile, latest data showed that sales at China's key retail and catering firms increased by 6.3% on year during the latest Labor Day holiday, a welcome sign for policymakers seeking to boost consumption to drive future economic growth.
