Hang Seng Index declines on final trading day of August with gold mining shares under pressure

31st August 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong equities opened lower on the final trading session of August, as the Hang Seng Index started the day down by 164 points, or 0.64 per cent, at 25,420 points with turnover reaching HK$11 billion. The China Enterprises Index fell by 46 points or 0.54 per cent to 8,444 points, while the Technology Index eased by 19 points or 0.42 per cent to 4,585 points.
Market sentiment was subdued, reflecting weakness in gold prices which saw notable declines among gold-related stocks. Zijin Mining dropped 4.6 per cent, ZJ Gold International fell 8.3 per cent, Zhaojin Mining retreated 7.3 per cent, Shandong Gold lost 2.5 per cent and Lao Feng Xiang declined 8.3 per cent. The banking and insurance sector was also generally lower, with HSBC Holdings down 0.5 per cent, AIA Group falling 1.3 per cent, Ping An Insurance down 0.8 per cent, and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing slipping 0.5 per cent.
Major technology shares showed mixed performances. Tencent slipped 0.9 per cent, Alibaba gained 0.9 per cent, Meituan climbed 2.5 per cent after its results announcement, Xiaomi edged up 0.2 per cent, JD.com was up 0.5 per cent, while Kuaishou fell 1.2 per cent. Elsewhere, BYD lost 0.4 per cent and China Resources Land declined 1.3 per cent after releasing their earnings.
