(MT Newswires) -- Chinese stocks ended mixed on Monday amid uncertainties surrounding tensions in the Middle East.
The Shanghai Composite Index, the main gauge of Chinese stocks, closed 0.2%, or 9.56 points, higher to reach 3,923.29. The Shenzhen Component Index slipped 0.3% or by 34.18 points to 13,726.19.
Uncertainty regarding the end of the hostilities in Iran rose as hopes for peace deals were overshadowed by the buildup of U.S. troops, while Iran's proxy forces in Yemen, the Houthis, are also complicating the situation, Reuters reported Monday.
"Markets now face headwinds from both geopolitical risks and weak technical signals, making a sharp turnaround unlikely for the near term," the report said, citing analysts from Nanhua Futures.
The Shanghai Composite Index declined 6.2% so far this month, while the Shenzhen Index slipped 5.1%.
Factory activity in the country could have expanded to 50.1 in March from 49 in February, Reuters reported separately, citing a poll of 28 economists.
Meanwhile, the leader of Taiwan's opposition Kuomintang party will visit Beijing in April, Xinhua News Agency reported Monday.
In corporate news, PetroChina'sShanghai stock rose 3% after saying capital expenditure in the oil, gas and new energy sectors will rise 7.7% year over year to 220.8 billion yuan in 2026.
