The Shanghai Composite edged down 0.2% to 4,172 on Friday, while the Shenzhen Component also slipped 0.2% to 15,615, after reaching two-month and over five-year highs, respectively, as market sentiment turned cautious amid renewed US-Iran tensions.
Reports indicated that three US Navy destroyers transiting the Strait of Hormuz intercepted Iranian attacks and launched retaliatory strikes, fueling concerns over regional stability and energy security.
Meanwhile, investors were also closely watching the upcoming meeting between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on May 14-15.
While the White House is reportedly proceeding with preparations for the visit, Chinese officials are said to be uneasy about holding the talks before the US-Iran conflict stabilizes.
Energy stocks were among the laggards, particularly PetroChina (-5.5%) and CNOOC (-5.0%).
Despite Friday's slight pullback, both benchmark indices remained on course to post a fifth consecutive weekly gain.
