(MT Newswires) -- Chinese shares rebounded on the first trading day in April as investors signaled optimism following U.S. President Donald Trump's statement that the war in Iran could end soon.
The Shanghai Composite Index, the main gauge of Chinese stocks, increased 1.5% or by 56.69 points to 3,948.55. The Shenzhen Component Index fell 1.7% or by 228.46 points to 13,706.52.
Trump earlier said the war in Iran could end in two to three weeks, adding forces could leave Iran "very soon," the BBC reported.
The pronouncement comes as Tehran says it has the 'necessary will" to end the war, the BBC said, citing President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Investors believe the war "will wrap up quickly," adding both countries will not need to strike a deal, Reuters reported separately, citing Shengqi Asset Management Chief Investment Officer Zeng Wenkai.
"U.S. troops will pull out, Iran won't really have a choice and won't block the strait, and global stocks will jump," Reuters quoted Zeng as saying.
Meanwhile, manufacturing activity in the country stayed in expansionary territory despite growth slowing in March, RatingDog said in its private reading. The indicator reached 50.8 during the month compared with a peak of 52.1 in February.
In the corporate scene, Dongfang Electric's Shanghai shares climbed 9% at market close following a 31% jump in its 2025 net attributable profit to 3.83 billion yuan.
Sungrow Powerplunged 11% despite a 22% rise in 2025 profit.
