Hang Seng Index declines after long holiday as gold mining stocks surge

22nd April 2025 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong's stock market saw consolidation following the long holiday. The Hang Seng Index (HSI) opened 91 points lower, or 0.42%, at 21,303 points. The China Enterprises Index fell by 31 points, or 0.39%, to 7,866 points, while the Technology Index dropped 32 points, or 0.66%, to 4,854 points.
Gold-related stocks experienced significant gains as international gold prices hit new highs. Zijin Mining rose 5.1%, Zhaojin Mining surged 7.2%, Shandong Gold climbed 9.3%, and Chifeng Jilong Gold Mining skyrocketed 14.9%.
Technology stocks showed mixed performance. Tencent rose 0.4%, Xiaomi gained 1.1%, while Alibaba slipped 0.2%. Meanwhile, Meituan fell 3.9%, and JD Group plunged 5.1%. Kuaishou remained unchanged.
Financial stocks generally trended downward. HSBC Holdings fell 0.8%, AIA dropped 0.6%, and Ping An Insurance also declined 0.6%. Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing saw no change in its stock price.
