Hang Seng Index opens firmer as tech shares mixed

8th July 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong equities opened slightly higher on Tuesday, with the Hang Seng Index edging up 44 points, or 0.18 per cent, to 23,541 at the open. Turnover in early trading stood at HK$3.22 billion. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index advanced 33 points, or 0.42 per cent, to 7,803, while the Hang Seng Tech Index gained 18 points, or 0.41 per cent, to 4,525.
Performance among heavyweight technology stocks was mixed. Alibaba climbed 1.2 per cent, Xiaomi rose 1.7 per cent and JD.com added 0.8 per cent. Kuaishou edged up 0.1 per cent, while Meituan slipped 0.6 per cent. Tencent Holdings was unchanged.
Energy counters were supported by firmer oil prices, with PetroChina gaining more than 1 per cent and CNOOC rising over 2 per cent. Lenovo was among the stronger performers, surging more than 4 per cent in early dealings.
Financial shares showed a divergent trend. HSBC Holdings fell 0.9 per cent and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing declined 0.3 per cent. In contrast, AIA Group ticked up 0.1 per cent and Ping An Insurance advanced 0.3 per cent.
