20th August 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong equities started the day on the front foot as the Hang Seng Index opened higher by roughly 284 points at 25,779, with early turnover at HK$3.55 billion and the Hang Seng Tech Index up about 1.7 per cent at 4,761. The tone was lifted by pre-earnings interest in Alibaba, which edged close to a two per cent gain at the open, while strength in precious metals helped push Zijin Mining more than four per cent higher. The upbeat print for the broader market was tempered by weakness in Kuaishou, which fell sharply in early trade following its results, sliding over four per cent and at one point dropping around ten per cent to a low near HK$33.42 shortly after the opening bell.
The move in tech suggested investors were selectively rotating within the growth complex, with sentiment buoyed by the softer yield backdrop overnight and by ongoing hopes that corporate updates will reaffirm resilient demand in core internet platforms. At the same time, bullion's firmer undertone continued to channel buying into gold-levered counters, adding a tailwind to miners. Early dealings also reflected brisk interest in index heavyweights as traders weighed external leads and positioned around upcoming earnings catalysts.
Live market updates pointed to an active session as participants tracked the immediate reaction to corporate scorecards and guidance. While Alibaba extended modest pre-announcement gains, Kuaishou's slump underscored how sensitivity to margins and user-growth trends remains elevated across the sector. With turnover building and the opening gap holding across benchmarks, the focus through the morning was on whether dip-buyers would stabilise underperformers and if commodity strength could keep resource names bid.
