Hang Seng Index opens higher with tech and financials in the lead

22nd January 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong stocks opened higher, with strong gains in heavyweight tech and financials lifting the market while gold miners softened in step with a weaker international gold price. Hang Seng Index opened up 165 points, or 0.62%, at 26,750; the China Enterprises Index rose 50 points, or 0.55%, to 9,173; and the Tech Index added 48 points, or 0.84%, to 5,795.
Early trade saw Tencent up 0.3 per cent, Alibaba advancing 1.7 per cent, Meituan edging 0.1 per cent higher, Xiaomi rising 0.9 per cent, JD.com up 0.9 per cent and Kuaishou gaining 1.5 per cent. Financials also added support as HSBC rose 0.7 per cent, AIA climbed 2.2 perc ent, Ping An added 0.7 per cent and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing ticked up 0.2 per cent.
In contrast, gold counters retreated, with Zijin Mining down 2.1 percent, Zijin Gold International off 2.6 per cent, Zhaojin Mining falling 2.8 per cent and Shandong Gold sliding 2.6 percent.
