15th October 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong shares opened on the back foot, with the Hang Seng Index starting 195 points lower at 24,119 amid subdued risk appetite. Early turnover reached about HK$3.6 billion as weakness in heavyweight technology names set the tone for the broader market.
The Hang Seng Tech Index slipped 2.2 per cent to 4,082, reflecting broad selling in platform and chip-adjacent exposures. Tencent Holdings and Alibaba Group each fell around 2 per cent at the open, while losses deepened in single-stock leveraged trackers tied to the Korean semiconductor cycle, with CSOP Samsung Electronics Daily (2x) Leveraged Product and CSOP SK Hynix Daily (2x) Leveraged Product tumbling a further 15 per cent.
By 9.22am, the Hang Seng Index remained 195 points lower at 24,119 with tech continuing to underperform. At 9.28am, new-listing chatter dominated the tape as investors parsed debut pricing and subscription metrics.
In primary market action, handset maker Transsion Holdings, dubbed the "phone king of Africa," was indicated to open about 1 per cent lower on its first day, implying a paper loss of roughly HK$34 for a one-lot allocation. The deal drew an oversubscription of 3.46 times with an allotment rate of 100 per cent for retail investors, underscoring brisk interest despite the softer tone.
