Hang Seng Index opens lower as tech shares decline

30th April 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong equities opened on a softer note on the final trading day of April, with technology stocks leading early losses.
The Hang Seng Index fell 103 points, or 0.39 per cent, at the opening bell to 26,008. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index dropped 47 points, or 0.54 per cent, to 8,757, while the Hang Seng Tech Index declined 33 points, or 0.67 per cent, to 4,876.
Major technology counters were broadly weaker. Alibaba slid 1.8 per cent, Meituan retreated 1.5 per cent and JD.com eased 1.4 per cent. Tencent and Xiaomi each fell by 1 per cent. In contrast, Kuaishou outperformed the sector, rising 1.9 per cent.
Financial stocks presented a mixed picture. HSBC shares slipped 0.8 per cent, while AIA Group gained 1.9 per cent following its latest results. China Life Insurance advanced 4 per cent after earnings, China Ping An was unchanged, and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing edged up 0.5 per cent.
