Hang Seng Index opens lower as tech shares slip

17th April 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong equities opened in negative territory on Friday morning, with technology stocks leading the decline.
The Hang Seng Index fell 183 points, or 0.69 per cent, to 26,210 at the open. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index dropped 64 points, or 0.72 per cent, to 8,840, while the Hang Seng Tech Index shed 36 points, or 0.71 per cent, to 5,055.
Major technology counters were broadly weaker. JD.com declined 1.6 per cent and Meituan lost 1.4 per cent. Tencent Holdings slipped 0.9 per cent, while Xiaomi Corp retreated 0.8 per cent. Alibaba Group fell 0.5 per cent and Kuaishou eased 0.4 per cent.
Financial stocks also traded lower. AIA Group dropped 1.6 per cent, China Ping An Insurance fell 1 per cent and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing slipped 0.7 per cent. HSBC Holdings edged down 0.5 per cent.
SenseTime came under additional pressure, sliding 2.3 per cent after announcing a share placement.
