Hang Seng Index opens lower as technology shares retreat and CNOOC bucks the slide

11th September 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong stocks fell at the start of trade, with the Hang Seng Index opening 236 points lower at 24,718 at 9.22am on turnover of about HK$3.24 billion. Losses deepened soon after, with the benchmark down 326 points, or 1.3 per cent, to 24,628, marking a fifth consecutive decline. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index slipped 104 points, or 1.25 per cent, to 8,170, while the Hang Seng Tech Index dropped 1.61 per cent to 4,260 amid cautious sentiment.
Heavyweight technology counters led the retreat. Tencent Holdings fell around 1.4 per cent and Alibaba Group eased 1.7 per cent, while Meituan lost 1.0 per cent. Xiaomi Corporation declined 1.4 per cent, JD.com shed 0.7 per cent and Kuaishou Technology dropped 1.9 per cent as investors pared risk in growth names.
Financials were softer, with HSBC Holdings down 1.6 per cent, AIA Group off 0.4 per cent, Ping An Insurance lower by 2.3 per cent and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing retreating 1.5 per cent. In contrast, energy plays gained alongside firmer crude prices, with CNOOC up 1.5 per cent and PetroChina advancing 0.6 per cent, helping to cushion broader market weakness.
Among individual movers, Sun Hung Kai Properties fell about 5 per cent after results, touching HK$110.4 in early dealings at around 9.32am. Metals names lagged, with Zijin Mining slipping close to 4 per cent. Traders said sentiment remains fragile following the recent run of declines, with participants awaiting fresh catalysts while monitoring global rate and commodity price developments.
