Hang Seng Index rises for fifth consecutive day as financial stocks support market

21st August 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong equities began the trading day on a positive note, with the Hang Seng Index opening 109 points higher at 25,807 points. By mid-morning, the benchmark had extended its gains to 160 points, or 0.62 per cent, reaching 25,858 points and marking a fifth consecutive day of advances. The China Enterprises Index rose 56 points, or 0.66 per cent, to 8,604 points, while the Technology Index edged up by 10 points, or 0.23 per cent, to 4,711 points. Market turnover stood at 19.2 billion Hong Kong dollars.
Financial shares provided notable support to the broader market. HSBC Holdings increased by 0.6 per cent, AIA Group rose by 1.4 per cent, Ping An Insurance rallied 3 per cent, and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing advanced by 0.7 per cent. Among leading technology stocks, share price movements were mixed; Tencent Holdings declined by 0.4 per cent, Meituan dropped by 1.1 per cent, while Alibaba Group climbed 1.4 per cent following its most recent financial results. Xiaomi Corporation rose 2.3 per cent, JD.com added 0.9 per cent, and Kuaishou Technology was up 0.8 per cent.
Elsewhere, Pop Mart International saw its shares tumble by 6.1 per cent after the company posted its earnings report, while NetEase also slipped by more than 1 per cent.
