Hang Seng Index slips at open as oil shares advance

14th July 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong equities opened modestly lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Hang Seng Index edging down 32 points, or 0.13 per cent, to 24,181. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index dipped by less than one point to 8,065, while the Hang Seng Tech Index fell 11 points, or 0.25 per cent, to 4,664. Technology stocks delivered a mixed performance in early dealings. Tencent Holdings was unchanged, while Alibaba Group declined 0.3 per cent and Meituan slipped 0.1 per cent. In contrast, Xiaomi gained 0.8 per cent and Kuaishou added 0.6 per cent. JD.com traded flat.
Financial counters also showed varied movements. HSBC eased 0.6 per cent and AIA Group dropped 0.2 per cent. China Ping An held steady, while Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing edged down 0.1 per cent.
Oil producers outperformed the broader market, tracking higher crude prices. CNOOC rose 2.4 per cent and PetroChina advanced 3.5 per cent in early trade.
