9th February 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong's stock market commenced trading on Monday with a substantial rally, fueled by robust gains across its cornerstone financial and technology sectors.
The Hang Seng Index surged by 422 points, or 1.59 per cent, to commence trading at 26,982 points. The positive momentum extended to the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index, which tracks major mainland Chinese firms listed in Hong Kong, rising by 139 points, or 1.54 per cent, to 9,170 points. The Hang Seng Tech Index, a key indicator for the technology sector, saw an even more pronounced increase, climbing 101 points, or 1.89 per cent, to open at 5,447 points.
Leading financial institutions provided strong support for the market's upward move. Banking heavyweight HSBC Holdings saw its shares increase by 3 per cent, while insurance leader AIA Group advanced by 2.2 per cent. Ping An of China, a major mainland insurer, recorded a gain of 3.1 per cent, and market operator Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing rose by 1.7 per cent.
The technology sector also contributed significantly to the rally. Major players in the e-commerce space performed strongly, with Alibaba Group rising by 2.9 per cent and JD.com gaining 2.7 per cent. Food delivery and services platform Meituan added 1.7 per cent, and social media company Kuaishou Technology increased by 1.1 per cent. Other key tech firms, Tencent Holdings and Xiaomi Corporation, posted more modest advances of 0.4 per cent and 0.5 per cent, respectively.
