2nd October 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong stocks began October on the back foot after the National Day break, with the Hang Seng Index gapping down 513 points at the open to 24,099 as turnover reached about HK$5.39 billion. The market briefly tested the 24,000 threshold within minutes, reflecting broad selling across blue chips and growth counters. The Hang Seng Tech Index slipped 1.8 per cent to 4,176 amid weakness in major internet names.
Banking heavyweights led declines at the open, with HSBC and Standard Chartered dropping more than 5 per cent, while AIA shed over 4 per cent. Technology bellwethers also weighed, with Tencent and Alibaba down around 2 per cent in early dealings as sentiment remained cautious following the holiday hiatus.
Early moves were volatile. By 9.31am, the benchmark extended losses to more than 600 points to fall through 24,000, before selective buying emerged. At 9.33am, New World Development defied the broader trend with sharp gains of around ten per cent after announcing it would hand back its interest in the 11 Skies complex to Airport Authority Hong Kong and pay HK$2.3 billion as part of its exit, with the authority set to assume full control and gain approval to take an equity stake.
