Hang Seng opens lower as Tencent drops over 3 per cent after results

13th August 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong stocks opened weaker, with the Hang Seng Index starting the session at 25,288, down 152 points or 0.6 per cent. The China Enterprises Index slipped 45 points, or 0.54 per cent, to 8,400, while the Tech Index eased 13 points, or 0.29 per cent, to 4,762. The softer tone set in at about 9.20am as sentiment turned cautious.
Large-cap technology shares led the decline. Tencent Holdings fell around 3.2 per cent following its results, while Alibaba Group and Meituan each lost about 1.1 per cent. Xiaomi Corporation edged down 0.9 per cent, JD.com retreated 1.6 per cent and Kuaishou Technology dipped 0.3 per cent. The moves reflected broad selling pressure across the sector after earnings updates and ahead of further macro signals.
Financials were mixed. HSBC Holdings advanced roughly 0.3 per cent, contrasting with losses in AIA Group, which dropped 1.5 per cent. Ping An Insurance eased 0.3 per cent, and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing slipped by the same margin. In a rare bright spot, Lenovo Group bucked the market trend and climbed about 3 per cent at the open, reaching a fresh record high.
