29th July 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong equities started firmly higher, with the Hang Seng Index up 176 points, or 0.69%, at 25,487. The China Enterprises Index added 63 points, or 0.75%, to 8,500, and the Hang Seng Tech Index climbed 48 points, or 1.01%, to 4,778.
Large-cap technology names set the pace. Tencent rose 1.3%, Alibaba advanced 1.7%, Meituan gained 1.2%, Xiaomi added 1.5%, JD.com increased 0.7% and Kuaishou was 0.7% higher. Financials helped underpin sentiment: HSBC edged up 0.4%, AIA added 0.9%, Ping An gained 0.7% and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing rose 0.2%. ASMPT traded 0.9% higher following its latest earnings update.
Broader market drivers were mixed but supportive at the open. A rebound in crude prices, amid renewed concerns over Middle East tensions following US action against threats to its bases, did little to dent risk appetite. In the chip sector, SK Hynix reported sharp year-on-year increases in revenue and operating profit but still fell short of forecasts, saying it is assessing options to return capital to shareholders. Elsewhere, Apple was reported to be preparing a home hub device built around a revamped Siri AI assistant, while Shein's U.S. business was said to be under Federal Trade Commission review. Investors will watch whether these global developments continue to feed into Hong Kong sentiment as the session unfolds.
