(Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei 225 limped to a weekly loss on Friday, as investors weighed prospects for the red-hot AI sector while stress in global bond markets weighed on sentiment.
The Nikkei slipped 0.02% to close at 69,030.92 on the day, recovering from an early loss of 1.3%. The index ended 0.39% lower for the week. The broader Topix gained 0.33% to 4,104.81 on Friday.
US equity indexes fell overnight, dragged by technology companies after a Financial Times report said OpenAI's annualized revenue was $20 billion less than the company previously signalled.
Shares of Nikkei heavyweight SoftBank Group, a major investor in OpenAI, sank about 4%.
Global borrowing costs remained elevated, as a surge in oil prices intensified inflation, adding to pressures from high corporate issuances and government debt.
"Reports that a major unlisted AI company's revenue fell short of its own forecasts triggered a chain reaction of selling in related stocks," Sony Financial Group analysts said in a report. "Globally high interest rates, driven in part by concerns over France's fiscal situation, are also capping stock price gains."
The week saw the Nikkei break back above the 70,000 mark to close at the highest since June 25 on Tuesday before losing momentum.
"Japanese shares rose sharply at the start of the week but were subsequently weighed down by profit-taking," Ina Harimoto, a market analyst at Tokai Tokyo Intelligence Laboratory, wrote in a report.
Domestic tech shares got a boost following an announcement by semiconductor equipment maker Rorze after the bell on Thursday that it was raising its earnings forecasts due to surging demand. The company's shares rose by the daily limit of 700 yen, or 15.79%.
There were 148 advancers on the Nikkei 225 against 74 decliners and 3 unchanged.
The largest losers were Fast Retailing, down 4.04%, followed by Renesas Electronics, 4% lower, and Asahi Kasei, which lost 3.94%.
The largest gainers were Shift, up 6.48%, followed by Nomura Research Institute, 5.09% higher, and Trend Micro, which gained 4.91% and marked its highest close since December 2025.
