(MT Newswires) - Japanese shares ended flat with negative bias on Friday as investors weighed the impact of US President Donald Trump's renewed tariff threats against Europe and Canada.
The Nikkei 225 fell 0.15%, or 58.49 points, to end at 39,587.87.
Trump said a 35% tariff on all Canadian imports will take effect from Aug. 1, with a similar notice to be sent to the European Union by Friday.
He also floated raising the baseline tariff rate to 15% or 20% from 10% for other countries.
Earlier this week, Trump delayed his July 9 deadline to Aug. 1 to allow more time for talks, but expanded the trade war by imposing new tariffs on countries including Japan and South Korea, and setting a 50% rate on copper.
