Japanese Stocks Rise as US Signals Willingness to Ease China Tariffs

(MT Newswires) -- Japanese stocks gained on Thursday after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said high tariffs between the US and China were unsustainable, signaling the Trump administration's willingness to ease tensions in the trade war.
The Nikkei 225 rose 0.49%, or 170.52 points, to close at 35,039.15.
Bessent emphasized that tariffs on Chinese and US goods must be lowered for trade talks to move forward, adding that the current trade rift was damaging to both nations.
The White House is reportedly open to significant tariff cuts on Chinese imports but will not act unilaterally.
In corporate news, Yageo Electronics Japan raised its tender offer for the shares of Shibaura Electronics to 5,400 yen from 4,300 yen.
Shibaura had previously supported MinebeaMitsumi's bid. As of April 22, MinebeaMitsumi is still weighing adjustments to its offer.
