Tokyo stocks open higher after Wall St. gains

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday tracking overnight gains on Wall Street amid hopes of easing trade tensions between the United States and China.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 318.86 points, or 0.91 percent, from Wednesday to 35,187.49. The broader Topix index was up 17.94 points, or 0.69 percent, at 2,602.26.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by nonferrous metal, insurance, and transportation equipment issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 143.19-20 yen compared with 143.42-52 yen in New York and 141.86-88 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The euro was quoted at $1.1328-1332 and 162.19-26 yen against $1.1308-1318 and 162.29-39 yen in New York and $1.1385-1386 and 161.51-55 yen in Tokyo late Wednesday afternoon.
