Tokyo stocks open higher after Wall Street gains

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Monday after gains on Wall Street late last week as optimism grew that trade tensions between the United States and China might ease.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 262.92 points, or 0.74 percent, from Friday to 35,968.66. The broader Topix index was up 30.20 points, or 1.15 percent, at 2,658.23.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by transportation equipment, construction and bank issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 143.84-86 yen compared with 143.67-77 yen in New York and 143.39-41 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Friday.
The euro was quoted at $1.1344-1346 and 163.20-22 yen against $1.1357-1367 and 163.24-34 yen in New York and $1.1359-1360 and 162.88-92 yen in Tokyo late Friday afternoon.
