Tokyo stocks open higher as yen weakens after Japan-US talks

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Friday as some exporter issues rose on a weaker yen after the Japanese finance minister said his U.S. counterpart had made no reference to currency targets during their meeting in Washington.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 509.09 points, or 1.45 percent, from Thursday to 35,548.24. The broader Topix index was up 30.35 points, or 1.17 percent, at 2,622.91.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by electric appliance, nonferrous metal and machinery issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 142.85-89 yen compared with 142.56-66 yen in New York and 142.57-59 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The euro was quoted at $1.1370-1373 and 162.43-51 yen against $1.1384-1394 and 162.42-52 yen in New York and $1.1379-1380 and 162.24-28 yen in Tokyo late Thursday afternoon.
