(Reuters) - India's equity benchmarks opened lower on Monday, as global trade concerns weighed on risk sentiment following U.S. President Donald Trump's warning that he would impose new tariffs this week.
The Nifty 50fell 0.3% to 23,493.3 as of 9:26 a.m. IST, while the BSE Sensexshed 0.26% to 77,640.74.
Ten of the 13 major sectors declined. The more domestically focussed smallcapsand midcapsfell 0.6% each.
The metals indexfell 2%, leading sectoral losses, after Trump on Sunday said he would impose 25% tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminium imports, along with reciprocal tariffs on all countries and matching each country's levy.
Other Asian markets inched lower, with the MSCI Asia ex-Japan index shedding 0.2%, as rising global trade tensions and weak economic data left investors rattled.
