Slovakia's populist government on Wednesday adopted a controversial law affecting the RTVS public television and radio broadcaster, which it accuses of lacking impartiality.
One of the main changes will see the RTVS general director elected by a new administrative council made up of nine members -- four nominated by the culture minister and the other five by parliament.
The move has been heavily criticised by the opposition and media rights groups such as Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
" RTVS will be transformed into a disinformation media that publishes pro-government propaganda," the right-wing SaS opposition party said.
Andrej Danko, the pro-Russian head of the ultranationalist Slovak National Party that is part of the governing coalition, said it was necessary "to do something against the deep socialism reigning at RTVS ".
In February, RSF warned against threats to press freedom in Slovakia, urging the populist government to protect journalists.
